The Sutherlins pass and look around the table. “If LHO and partner pass, we have little chance of making game and going plus. Otherwise, we have a better chance of describing our hand at the next opportunity.”
The Joyces, forlornly: “We can’t double or bid 1NT with a club void, so we have no bid.”
Cohen passes and says, “I hope I am not turning into an ‘old-school bidder.’ But this is an old-school action.”
Boehm passes and asks, “Is this still legal in 2013?”
Kennedy passes. “For the time being.”
Sanborn passes. “I hope to be able to describe this hand next round.”
Meyers passes. “The animal bid would be to bid Michaels.”
The Gordons pass. “No comment.”
Pass by Stack. “The opponents are vulnerable, so we will try to get plus 200 or better. We obviously may have a part score or possibly a game, but they are in our pea patch now and it could get worse for them if they continue bidding and we get them doubled.”
Colchamiro says, “Pass — for now. Some are going to try 2♦ for majors, but I’m not. I can’t believe any panelist will risk a double, nor should they. If righty responds 1NT and it comes back to me, my balancing double should work out whether partner thinks it’s for business and passes, or believes it’s for takeout and bids. If he gives me 2♣, I’ll try 2♦ and hope he figures out what’s going on. If he bids a major, I’ll raise to three.”
Robinson is a doubler. “I hope partner bids a major.”
Meckstroth doubles. “I could overcall 1NT but want to try and find a majorsuit fit. If partner bids clubs, I’ll overbid and bid notrump.”
Double by the Coopers. “Even if not playing extended equal-level conversion (the way we play, we can be missing any suit, not just a minor), if partner bids the expected 2♣, we’ll bid 2♦ , hoping he now bids a major (which might be only three cards). If partner bids a major over our double, we’ll jump raise.”
Hampson chances 2♦ , Michaels. “Hopefully partner will jump in a major and I can raise.”
Ditto Lawrence. “Do I finally have a hand where more than one voter chooses Michaels with 4–4 in the majors?” Including yourself, Michael, yes! there are two Michaels proponents!
